Symptoms/Misunderstandings

Symptoms of autism can oftentimes lead to social challenges, and communication may be hard for someone with autism. Repetitive behaviors are a common sign of autism, and can make consistent conversation a difficult task.

Sensory issues, especially a sensitivity to light and noise, are also a common symptom of autism. Too many changes of setting or location can lead to a sense of anxiety, especially if new people are introduced or present at each new setting. Eye contact, tone of voice, and unnatural gestures are all common in people with autism as well.

While autism can be a deterrent to daily life, many people with autism live their lives with no assistance at all, and are extremely successful in their careers. Autism itself does not specifically mean a person has an intellectual disability, and over 1 in 45 children in the US have autism today.
